CFA zone interoperability, and why Ghana is the outlier
Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire sit inside the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA); Cameroon sits in the separate Central African CFA zone. Starting September 30, 2026, every UEMOA bank, e-money issuer, and payment establishment must connect to a shared interoperable instant-payment rail (PI-SPI)—a regional infrastructure push that doesn't apply to Ghana, which runs its own cedi-denominated mobile money market independent of any CFA zone. That makes Ghana the outlier of the four: same mobile-money-first pattern, but a completely separate monetary and regulatory track.
RedotPay does not publish a direct MoMo, Orange Money, or Wave integration in any of these four markets—this is general market context, not a RedotPay feature claim. Confirm current eligibility and fees for your account in the app.
Frequently asked questions
What is Wave, and where is it most used?
Wave is a mobile wallet known for low fees and simplicity, and it's the most-used wallet in Senegal specifically. Orange Money and MTN Mobile Money remain larger or comparable across the other three countries in this group.
Are Senegal and Cameroon in the same currency zone?
No—Senegal is in the West African CFA zone (UEMOA), while Cameroon is in the separate Central African CFA zone (CEMAC). Both currencies are called CFA francs but are not interchangeable.
Why is Ghana different from the other three?
Ghana uses its own currency (the cedi) and mobile money market independent of any CFA monetary union, while Senegal, Cameroon, and Cote d'Ivoire are all inside CFA zones with region-wide interoperability rules taking effect in 2026.
