Is RedotPay legal in Botswana?
Answer each half with the document that actually says it:
- Does RedotPay restrict Botswana? No on the three Help Center lists as of 17 September 2026. Botswana is not among the card-issuance-restricted countries where neither virtual nor physical cards can be issued.
- What have Botswana authorities published? The Bank of Botswana Press Release — Statement on Crypto Assets – Participation and Regulation (10 November 2021) observed that there was then no specific legal or regulatory framework pertaining to (or proscribing) investment in crypto assets such as Bitcoin; that trading was akin to other intangible assets with risk of total loss; that due diligence was advisable; that underlying activity might relate to pyramid schemes or scams; that calling crypto assets "currencies" was a misnomer because they lacked the complementary characteristics of money; and that there was no backing by the state or central bank with respect to legal tender status, transferability, exchange, and value. Separately, the Virtual Assets Act, 2022 (Act No. 3 of 2022) in the Extraordinary Government Gazette of 25 February 2022 provides that a person shall not carry out or participate in a virtual asset business unless holding a virtual asset service provider licence or issuer-of-initial-token-offerings licence issued under the Act, and it defines carrying on a virtual asset business to include offering virtual asset services to persons resident in Botswana irrespective of physical location. This guide has not verified, on the review date, a public NBFIRA licence list naming RedotPay — NBFIRA web pages could not be reached on this review date.
RedotPay not listing Botswana does not override the Virtual Assets Act, BoB statements, or tax rules that apply to you. This page is not legal advice.
Botswana's payment environment: BISS for large value, BACH EFTs for everyday electronic transfers
Botswana's supervised payment story in the Bank of Botswana's own supervision report is bank-rail heavy rather than mobile-money-first. The Banking Supervision Annual Report 2024 states that financial market infrastructures (BISS, BACH, and the central securities depository) remained stable. Botswana Interbank Settlement System (BISS) volumes rose 14.8 percent from 194,726 transactions in 2023 to 223,520 in 2024, while value rose 38.6 percent from P1.13 trillion to P1.57 trillion. On the retail clearing side, electronic funds-transfer transactions through BACH rose 10.1 percent from 11.3 million in 2023 to 12.5 million in 2024, with value up 10.9 percent from P300.9 billion to P333.6 billion. The same report notes cheque cessation and a project to develop a national retail payments switch aimed at interoperability.
Elsewhere in that report, EFT value as a proportion of nominal GDP is described as rising from 114.1 percent in 2023 to 126.8 percent in 2024 — a signal that electronic transfers already carry a large share of economic transactions in pula terms. That strength is about regulated domestic EFTs and RTGS, not about replacing every foreign card checkout.
The same supervision report's year-end census is Botswana-specific: commercial banks remained at nine and statutory banks at two, while operating bureaux de change fell from 52 to 49, and electronic payment services plus money or value-transfer-service providers fell from 25 to 23. That supervised perimeter does not, by itself, place RedotPay on any BoB licence list.
Hard-currency subscriptions sit outside that pula machinery. BACH and BISS move Botswana money between supervised participants; they do not force every foreign merchant to accept a local debit product. This guide has not verified any BoB time series of cross-border e-commerce decline rates. Nothing in the RedotPay Help Center materials reviewed for this page documents a BACH push, Orange Money cash-in, or Instant Payment path into RedotPay. Act No. 3 of 2022 regulates virtual asset businesses that serve Botswana residents — that statute is not a product brochure for RedotPay.
What that means for a RedotPay user in Botswana
Read the BACH numbers and the Virtual Assets Act together, not as one slogan:
- Pula salary credits, merchant EFTs, and BISS large-value moves belong on BoB-supervised banks — nothing in RedotPay's Help Center documents a BWP clearing substitute.
- Where the app will issue a card, the job that matches Botswana's gap is hard-currency online checkout that BACH alone cannot settle; reconfirm eligibility before you pay SAVE2 or DZ100 (lists open as of 17 September 2026).
- Act No. 3 of 2022 can still constrain how you acquire crypto inside Botswana even though RedotPay's three country lists omit Botswana.
- BoB's 2021 press release remains useful as a consumer-risk warning (no central-bank backing as money); it does not cancel the later statute, and neither document certifies RedotPay.
- Physical shipping is not blocked on RedotPay's delivery list here; only the app's address check is decisive.
Start, fees, and login (short)
- Account setup: one registration flow via how to register; documents are shown in-app during KYC.
- Card price targets: enter SAVE2 for a virtual card near $8, or DZ100 for a physical card near $80, only on the card checkout screen — see promo codes.
- Access problems: after Forgot password, withdrawals / internal transfers / currency conversion pause 24 hours; five consecutive wrong passwords auto-lock the account for 24 hours while card purchases continue.
Frequently asked questions
Is RedotPay legal in Botswana?
Keep two files open. RedotPay's three restriction pages omit Botswana as of 17 September 2026. BoB's 10 November 2021 press release said crypto then lacked a specific framework and central-bank backing as money; Act No. 3 of 2022 in the 25 February 2022 Extraordinary Gazette later requires VASP licences. Not legal advice.
Can Batswana residents open a RedotPay card?
Help Center lists do not name Botswana in the 17 September 2026 review, so registration and card order usually work after KYC. Your in-app eligibility screen is still authoritative.
Does RedotPay connect to BACH EFTs or Orange Money?
No such integration appears in the RedotPay Help Center materials used here. BoB's Banking Supervision Annual Report 2024 is the source for the 12.5 million / P333.6 billion BACH EFT figures — domestic context only.
Can I pay overseas stores with RedotPay from Botswana?
A card issued in the app targets network merchants. BACH moves pula between banks; it does not guarantee every foreign subscription will authorise.
What if I can't log in to my RedotPay account?
Tap Forgot password on the login screen, verify with your registered email or phone, and set a new password. For 24 hours after a reset, withdrawals, internal transfers, and currency conversion are paused as a standard security measure, but your card keeps working for purchases.
Why is my RedotPay account locked?
Five consecutive incorrect password attempts trigger an automatic 24-hour lock. Your card stays active for spending during that time; wait it out, or use Forgot password to verify and reset once you can pass verification.
