Is RedotPay legal in Ecuador?
Ecuador needs two separate answers:
- Does RedotPay restrict Ecuador? On 17 September 2026 all three of RedotPay's official Help Center restriction lists (unsupported countries, card issuance, card delivery) were checked, and Ecuador is on none of them. Residents of countries on the card-issuance list cannot get either a virtual or a physical card; Ecuador is not one of them.
- What have BCE / JPRM published about criptoactivos? BCE's Spanish notice dated 12 August 2024 (“Los criptoactivos no son una moneda de curso legal, ni un medio de pago autorizado en ecuador”) cites Resolución JPRM-2022-005-M (11 February 2022) and Resolución JPRM-2023-015-M (9 August 2023): legal tender is the US dollar, and domestic monetary/financial operations are expressed in that dollar. The same notice cites Resolución JPRM-2023-014-M (7 August 2023), whose authorised electronic payment means are listed as electronic payment transfers, electronic collection transfers, credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards — not criptoactivos. BCE adds that using unauthorised payment means (or simulating them) is prohibited under COMF article 98, and that detected use of crypto as a payment mean can be referred to the Fiscalía. This guide has not verified a comprehensive Ecuadorian VASP licensing statute comparable to Brazil's Lei 14.478.
App geo-availability never cancels BCE/JPRM payment-mean rules or Ecuadorian tax duties. Not legal advice — re-read the BCE notice and JPRM PDFs, or hire Ecuadorian counsel, before you treat crypto as a domestic checkout tool.
Ecuador's payment environment: dollar SPI clears the country — foreign PANs are a different problem
Ecuador's distinctive official fact is full dollarization of legal tender, restated by JPRM-2023-015-M: the moneda de curso legal is the US dollar. That removes local FX conversion between “home currency” and a USD network card, but it does not rewrite the BCE/JPRM rule that criptoactivos are outside the authorised medios de pago list.
On top of that dollar base sits the BCE-operated Sistema Central de Pagos (SCP). BCE's Spanish Boletín 7 — Sistema Nacional de Pagos for year 2025 reports that the SCP channelled USD 242,758.3 million across 148.7 million operations. Interbank payments (SPI) alone were USD 194,286.7 million — about 80% of SCP value — in roughly 122 million operations. Cheque clearing (CCC) was about USD 34,544.2 million (14.2%) and interbank collections (SCI) about USD 13,927.3 million (5.7%). Versus 2024, SCP value rose 11.7% while operation count fell 1.5%. Those figures describe domestic USD account-to-account plumbing, not a Visa/Mastercard card number for a US SaaS invoice.
Everyday Ecuadorian checkout therefore leans on SPI transfers plus the JPRM-listed card products. Foreign online merchants that expect a network primary account number — or that decline certain Ecuadorian-issued cards — remain a separate friction; this guide has not verified a BCE-published overseas decline-rate series. RedotPay publishes no SPI, BCE, or Ecuadorian bank-transfer funding integration on the Help Center pages reviewed here. Combined with BCE's warning against using criptoactivos as a domestic payment mean, the practical split is: SPI/cards for dollar daily life inside authorised rails; a network card (when the app issues one) only for specific international checkout — never as a BCE-authorised crypto wallet substitute.
What that means for a RedotPay user in Ecuador
You already live in USD legal tender (JPRM-2023-015-M). SPI's ~USD 194bn / ~122mn 2025 ops already move most domestic value. Use RedotPay only as a backup international card if Card still shows after you re-check Help Center — never as an SPI replacement and never as a way to “pay in crypto” inside Ecuador against BCE's 12 August 2024 notice. Ship plastic only when the app's address validator agrees.
Start, fees, and login (short)
Dollarized path: create the account, pass identity, open Card. Apply SAVE2 (~$8) or DZ100 (~$80) on the card screen only (codes). Password reset parks withdrawals/transfers/conversion 24h; five wrong passwords park login 24h while spend continues. Official articles are linked in Sources.
Frequently asked questions
Is RedotPay legal in Ecuador?
Help Center lists omit Ecuador as of 17 September 2026. BCE's 12 August 2024 notice — citing JPRM-2023-015-M (9 August 2023) and JPRM-2023-014-M (7 August 2023) — says criptoactivos are not legal tender and not an authorised electronic payment means. Not legal advice.
Can I use RedotPay in Ecuador?
Published restriction pages do not name Ecuador as of 17 September 2026. The app still decides per account.
Does RedotPay plug into SPI?
No SPI funding path appears on the Help Center pages reviewed here. BCE's 2025 SNP bulletin already counts ~USD 194.3bn / ~122mn SPI operations without RedotPay.
Can Ecuadorians pay foreign merchants with RedotPay?
If Card issues, it targets network merchants — often overseas checkouts SPI cannot pay. Declines still happen; see the card-payment-declined guide.
What if I can't log in to my RedotPay account?
In Ecuador, use Forgot password on the login screen, verify with your registered email or phone, and create a new password. For the next 24 hours RedotPay pauses withdrawals, internal transfers, and currency conversion, while the card can still complete purchases.
Why is my RedotPay account locked?
Five consecutive incorrect passwords lock an Ecuador account for 24 hours. Card spending stays available; wait for the lock to end or complete Forgot password once verification works.
